Dialogue on Business and Human Rights
13 & 14 March 2018

Since 2013, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has sought to promote an awareness and understanding of the impact of business on human rights in South Africa. The SAHRC seeks to build on its past activities and improve collaboration between the State, business, labour, and civil society, to progressively strengthen the responsibility businesses carry in respect of human rights.

The SAHRC will host a Dialogue on Business and Human Rights on 13 & 14 March 2018 to discuss critical issues with regard to the impact of business on human rights across primary stakeholder groups, including government, business, labour, and civil society.

The dialogue, which is being held in March, Human Rights Month, is intended to further the SAHRC’s mandate in promoting and protecting human rights by improving collaboration between the State, business and civil society on pressing business and human rights issues. The dialogue will seek to distil key human rights issues emanating from business sectors in South Africa and enhance public understanding and awareness of the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in upholding and protecting human rights in business environments.  Panelists and participants include representatives from government, civil society, private sector, the media, and other key sectors.

The dialogue will include a key note address on the broad theme of business and human rights and will be followed by four panel discussions on:

  • The Role of Business in Equality and Development
  • Corporate Accountability and State-owned Enterprises
  • Business and Community Engagement
  • Employment Equity
